Le Mat (“The Fool”)
From the Tarot of Marseille.
Description
The Fool is depicted as a man walking toward the future, leaning on a staff, with a small sack slung over his shoulder. Dressed as a jester, he seems carefree, while a wolf snaps at his heels, perhaps trying to hold him back. The card’s most notable feature is its lack of a number, symbolizing that The Fool exists beyond the limitations of this world. His attire reflects the way people may laugh at him, either for his apparent foolishness or hidden wisdom. The sack represents the sum of his life experiences, and the staff embodies his will and curiosity. Having left everything behind, he sets out into the unknown, taking a path that diverges from his past. With an open, aimless future, some interpret the wolf’s bite as an attempt to prevent him from stepping into the void.
Traditional Interpretation
The Fool embodies the adventurer, the one who leaves everything behind to explore the unknown. To some, it represents a person who, though seemingly reckless, has a clear sense of direction and purpose. Others may view them as foolish simply because they defy convention, but in truth, they are fully aware of the path they're on and what they seek.
Kabbalistic Interpretation
Associated with the letter Tau, the Earth, and the number 400.
Esoteric Interpretation
Linked to the element of Fire, the number 22 (22 = 2 + 2 = 4). Some associate this figure with Fire, while others associate it with the four elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. They believe the bundle he carries on his back contains these four elements.
Numerology Interpretation
The Fool represents the number 22: wisdom and supreme reason.
